Biochemical composition and energy value of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) cultured in the bay of Marennes-Oleron ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice.
In the bay of Marennes-Oleron the dry flesh of Crassostrea gigas ranged from 29 to 52% proteins, 10 to 23% ash, 6 to 20% lipids and 0 to 4% carbohydrates of which 48.3 ± 21.6% were glycogen. The energy value ranged from 18.84 to 23.47 joule. Mg(-1) ash free dry weight (mean 20.27 J. mg(-1). Reproductive effort varied from 17.8 to 55.9% dry weight for males, and 43.1 to 61.9% for females during the first and third year of reproduction respectively. A high energy value for female gametes (23.47 to 26.24 J. mg(-1) dry tissue) was mainly due to a higher level of lipids (17.3 to 23% of dry tissue) in female gametes as compared to that in male gametes (5.9 to 12.3% of dry tissue). During the period of mass-loss which began in October and finished in March, the...

Crepidula fornicata L. (Gastéropode, Calyptraeidae) dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron : composition et valeur énergétique des individus et des pontes ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice.
In the bay of Marennes-Oléron, the shell represents 60% and the dry flesh from 3 to 8.5% of the total weight of Crepidula fornicata. Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition of the dry flesh show two periods of spawning for the females and a single period of reproduction for the males, and that the main component of the energy reserve is glycogen. The mean energy value of Crepidula fornicata varies between 15.1 and 19.3 joules/mg of ash-free dry weight of flesh (average 17.7) and this value is higher in the males than the females, during aIl the periods of reproduction. The females lay, as early as their third year, about 56 egg capsules at each spawning, containing a total of Il 725 eggs with an energy value of 22.4 joules/mg ash free dry weight.

Evaluation of milled pearl millet in the feeding of growing rabbits R. Bras. Zootec.
Catelan,Fernanda; Scapinello,Claudio; Figueira,Josianny Limeira; Oliveira,Andréia Fróes Galuci; Motta,Ana Carolina Monteiro.
Two experiments were carried out in order to estimate the nutritional value and the performance of growing rabbits fed different levels of pearl millet (ADR 7010). In the digestibility trial, nutritional values of pearl millet were determined in 22 45-day-old New Zealand White rabbits, allotted in a completely randomized design, subjected to two treatments - a reference diet and a test diet with 70% of its volume composed of reference diet and 30% of pearl millet - and 11 replications. The apparent digestibility values of dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and gross energy of the pearl millet were 88.7, 85.4, 24.4 and 75.0%, respectively. In the performance trial, 120 32-day-old New Zealand White rabbits were used. Rabbits were allotted in...

Net energy evaluation of feeds and determination of net energy requirements for pigs R. Bras. Zootec.
Noblet,Jean.
Feeds for pigs can be attributed different energy values according to, first, the step considered in energy utilization (DE: digestible energy, ME: metabolizable energy and NE: net energy) and, second, the method used for estimation at each step. Reference methods for evaluating DE content are based on in vivo digestibility measurements; indirect estimates of DE values are obtained from in vitro methods or prediction equations based on chemical characteristics. Methods have also been proposed for estimating urinary energy (and gas energy to a smaller extent) in order to calculate ME content from DE value. The NE values originate from energy balance studies (slaughter methods or, more commonly, indirect calorimetry measurements in respiration chambers) and...

Nutritive value of diets containing pods of faveira (Parkia platycephala Benth.) for confined finishing sheep R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Lília Raquel Fé da; Alves,Arnaud Azevêdo; Vasconcelos,Vânia Rodrigues; Nascimento,Hoston Tomas Santos do; Moreira Filho,Miguel Arcanjo.
Performance and apparent digestibility were evaluated in sheep fed diets containing different amounts of faveira (Parkia platycephala) pods in replace to corn. Twenty crossbred Santa Inês lambs of approximately four months of age and average 21 kg were kept in individual stalls in randomized blocks and distributed according to weight. The following characteristics were evaluated: average daily gain, feed conversion and voluntary intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), total carbohydrates (TCH), non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC); and apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF, ADF, TCH, NFC and total digestible nutrients (TDN). P. platycephala pods inclusion in the diets...

Renewable energy integration into the Australian National Electricity Market: Characterising the energy value of wind and solar generation AgEcon
Boerema, Nicholas; Kay, Merlinde; MacGill, Iain.
This paper examines how key characteristics of the underlying wind and solar resources may impact on their energy value within the Australian National Electricity Market(NEM). Analysis has been performed for wind generation using half hour NEM data for South Australia over the 2008-9 financial year. The potential integration of large scale solar generation has been modelled using direct normal solar radiant energy measurements from the Bureau of Meteorology for six sites across the NEM. For wind energy, the level and variability of actual wind farm outputs in South Australia is analysed. High levels of wind generation in that State have been found to have a strong secondary effect on spot prices. Wind generation's low operating costs will see it displacing...

Research on feeding standard of beef cattle and feedstuff database in the Indochinese peninsula OAK
Nishida, T; Suzuki, T; Phaophaisal, I; Pholsen, P; Narmsilee, R; Indramanee, S; Oshio, S; 西田, 武弘.
At Khon Kaen in northeastern Thailand, energy metabolism in cattle was studied by a respiration trial system using a ventilated flow-through method with a face mask built with technical and financial support of Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS). Energy values of locally available feed resources have also been obtained from digestion and respiration trials. JIRCAS also had already completed a new ventilated head-hood apparatus for energy balance trials and started the data accumulation concerning the energy value of Pangola grass (Digitaria eriantha) with Brahman beef steers. As for the energy balance measurement technique, JIRCAS supports the establishment of feeding standard by measuring the energy requirement of...
